Big & Dangerous Game Safaris
Hunting in Africa
Big Game – is for many the very essence of hunting in Africa. Big Game does not just mean big animals, but big challenges and experiences. Technically speaking by far the most hunting in Africa is actually Big Game Hunting. Even many species of antilope are actually classed as big game. However, if is first and foremost The Big Five, that one thinks about when the conversation turns to big game hunting. Lion, Leopard, Cape Buffalo, Elephant and Rhinoceros have been the great attraction for Big Game hunters travelling to Africa on safari for centuries, and they still are. While it is true that hunting for rhino is perhaps not once what it once was, as today this species is highly protected and surrounded by a great deal of security, the remaining species can still be hunted in the wild African bush – with all the wonderful experiences that this brings with it. Generally speaking, it is only in the areas where hunting outfitters operate that the increasing levels of poaching have been brought under control, which elsewhere have grown alarmingly, especially with regard to elephants, over recent years. This is just one of the reasons why it is actually Big Game-Hunting, that is now the best tool for conserving Africa’s large mammals in their natural habitat in the wild. As just about no hunting for Rhinoceros is carried out anymore, hunters now talk about the Big Four. Hunting for The Big Four can be done with a completely clear conscience, as the hunt will help to save far more animals from poaching than will be actually taken during hunting. Classical and well-functioning Big Four-destinations are Zimbabweand South Africa.
Lion Hunting
Scientific Name: Panthera leo
Subspecies: Up to 7 geographic subspecies are recognised. They are here all descriped as one:
Distribution: The different species has common distribution, stretching from Senegal in the West to Ethiopia and Somalia in the East, and across a broad belt along the East African coast to the northern part of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Angola and Congo (Zaire).
Habitat: All types of terrain.
Description: Unmistakable large animal of the cat family weighing up to 250 kg, with a shoulder height of 80 – 100 cm.. Coat short and uniform, varying from ochraceous silvery-grey to dark ochre brown, somewhat darker on the head. Only males have a mane on neck and shoulders. The mane may have different colours and are accordingly divided into: Black Maned Lions Cinnamon Lions Common Lion (when the mane has the same colour as the rest of the animal’s body) Maneless Lion. The mane of the lion is very different in size depending on where the Lion lives. If from areas with thickets and bush, the Lions do not develop a large mane (or it is worn off). In other areas, such as Bangweulu in Zambia, there is not much in the way of thickets or bush and the manes on the lions from that area are particularly large and bushy. The ability to develop a large mane is also genetically determined, however.
Hunting method: Pursch or hunting from a hide by the use of bait.
Hunting available in: Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Lion hunts in Africa are at the top of every hunter’s wish list. Lions are truly kings of the jungle and are the beasts of legends. The taking of a male Lion has been a challenge that man has pursued since the dawn of mankind, and even today, the taking of a majestic male African Lion is a magical moment. Lion hunts in Africa still offer the modern day hunter the challenge of facing off against this most fearsome of beasts. The African male Lion is the largest cat still being hunted on the planet. Along with the Leopard, these two cats make up two of Africa’s big five dangerous game animals.
Lion hunting in Africa can be broken down into two major classifications. Wild Lion hunts and high-fence captive reared Lion hunts. Both Lion hunts can offer the hunter a great challenge if done properly. It is estimated that there are approximately 32,000 – 35,000 wild Lions left roaming in wild Africa. These Lions are mostly located in what is known as stronghold areas. Wild lions are under pressure from man’s expanding footprint on the African continent and from the resulting human / Lion conflict that arises from this encroachment into the Lion’s historical range. Wild Lions are typically hunted by hanging bait at multiple locations and then waiting for a mature male Lion to hit the bait. Once a suitable Lion is feeding on the bait, a blind is quickly prepared and the hunter lies in wait hoping to catch the Lion feeding during daylight hours. An effort is being made in many African countries to only take male Lions that are 6 years of age and older and therefore have passed their breeding prime. Permits are very limited for wild Lions and therefore are expensive. Wild Lion hunts start around $55,000 and run upwards of $100,000.
High fence Lion hunts involve releasing captive raised Lions into a large enclosure and then allowing the Lion time to adapt to its new habitat. The Lion hunts are then conducted via tracking, many times in the Kalahari Desert. These type of Lion hunts in Africa allow for close up direct confrontations with Lions and can prove to be very exciting.
A Brief History of African Lion Hunting
The first South African Legislation on the Killing of Predators was established in 1656. Six realen were awarded to those who shot or captured Lions. During the last decade of the 19th century, more than 4,000 Lions were killed in Kruger National Park, and its surrounding territories. The first 30 years of the 20th century, park rangers killed another 1,200 Lions. In ancient Egypt, Lion hunts were reserved for pharaohs. The Lion is now totally extinct in North Africa.
Lion hunting, wherever it may be done, is an exciting and sometimes dangerous pastime for the hunter. Contrary to the Walt Disney company portrayal of Lions, the African lion is an apex, fearless predator that has rightfully been named “The King of Beasts”. It has also been called a somewhat less positive name – mankiller! One famous pair of Lions terrorized railway workers in the Tsavo River area of Kenya in 1898 by reducing the worker population by between 28 to 31 men (unlike the 100+ that were portrayed in the movie The Ghost and the Darkness).
African Lion Hunting Methods
Baiting Lions
This method requires that a bait be hung in a tree in such a way that a Lion can reach the meat but cannot drag it off. A Blind/Hide is built 30-50 yards from the bait where the hunter and his Professional Hunter (PH) can wait for the Lion while not being seen. The bait will be checked every day, and if a Lion hits on it, the hunter will go into the Blind/Hide in the early afternoon and hunt the Lion.
Spot & Stalking African Lions
Usually this method involves the hunter, the PH and one or more trackers. The safari truck can be employed to search for Lion spore. Then the hunt begins on foot. This is a very exciting way to hunt lion in Africa. The animal is unpredictable, fast, and stealthy. If the animal isn’t dropped with the first shot, life can get quite interesting quite rapidly. A wounded Lion will sometimes lie in wait, then charge when the hunter is close. It will target a single individual, and not stop until it is killed.

Hunting Elephants in Africa one of the great adventures of African big game hunting. Elephants are the largest land mammal on earth, and for thse taking elephant hunting safaris, it is the pinnacle of a big game hunter’s career. Man has been taking an elephant hunt in Africa since the beginning of time. Hunted first for its meat, then for its ivory, and now for the sport and challenge that it offers, an elephant hunt has always attracted those that sought the challenge of stalking and taking down the largest land mammal on earth. Elephant populations have been greatly reduced in Africa due to rampant poaching for its valuable ivory and by reduction in habitat and resulting conflict with humans brought on the expanding population in Africa.
An elephant hunt today is limited to only a handful of countries in modern day Africa. Rampant poaching for its valuable ivory and man’s encroachment into its traditional habitat have caused many countries to stop the hunting of elephants. Restrictions on the importation of ivory by western countries and Europe have further curtailed elephant hunts in Africa. But elephant hunt provides needed financial resources to many African countries and most experts agree that sport hunting of elephants is necessary to bring value to the African elephant and to help ensure its long term survival.
Traditional methods for an elephant hunt involves cutting fresh tracks either at a waterhole or crossing a road and then setting out on foot following the tracks and hoping to catch up with the elephants and be able to get a good look at its ivory. Elephants travel large distances in a day’s time, so a hunter should be prepared to walk long distances under hot, dry conditions.
Most countries in Africa have what is known as the African Savanna Elephant. A second species of African Elephant, the forest Elephant, is found in the equatorial forest belt of West Central Africa. Trophy hunting for forest elephant is only allowed in Cameroon at the present time. The largest elephant trophies are currently found adjacent to national parks, and every year or two an elephant hunt in Africa produces a 100lbs elephant.
Elephant trophies taken in Zimbabwe that are to be exported to the US require a ESA permit from USFWS in addition to a CITES import permit.!
This is your chance to hunt Elephant in Zimbabwe with one most experienced big game outfitters in Africa! This outfitter is one of the oldest and most reputable dangerous game outfitters in Zimbabwe. For three generations, the methods of successfully taking Africa’s dangerous game have been passed from father to son here.
You will arrive at Victoria Falls, where you will be met by your PH. Victoria Falls is the perfect place to spend a couple of extra days after your hunt to see the world-famous Victoria Falls, which is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. This spectacular sight should not be missed. Day trips to Chobe National Park in Botswana are available, where you can view the extensive damage that an overpopulation of elephants can cause. Elephant rides, walking with lions, curio shopping, zip-lining over the Zambezi River and sunset cruises on the Zambezi while viewing crocodiles and hippos are just some of the many activities that are available. And don’t miss an elegant unforgettable high-noon tea or elegant evening dinner at the world famous Victoria Falls Hotel.

Crocodile Hunts in Africa
Crocodiles, along with hippos, round out the dangerous seven African animals. All in all, crocodile hunts in Africa are not that dangerous. Crocodiles are dangerous to hunt because they are stealth ambush feeders and take a fair number of villagers each year while they are washing clothes and performing other activities near the water’s edge. Not to mention that looking for a wounded crocodile in waist deep murky water is fraught with danger and certain to raise the hairs on the back of one’s neck.
The Nile crocodile occupies the Nile River basin in Northern Africa and extends throughout equatorial Africa southward into northern South Africa and Mozambique. Crocodiles grow up to 18 feet in length and may weigh in at over 1,000 pounds. Specimens have been taken in excess of 20 feet in length. A true trophy monster croc in today’s Africa is any crocodile that is over 15 feet in length. In the old days, Crocodile hunts in Africa were done while hunting other species. Today, they are still added to the bag while on safari for other species, but in modern Africa it is becoming more common to take a specialized hunting safari targeting trophy Crocodile and hippo combined. Taking a trophy Crocodile can be pure luck, but typically it requires a dedicated crocodile hunt where the day’s primary activities are centered upon baiting and / or spotting a large Crocodile and then trying to get within range for a lethal shot.
Anchoring a Crocodile basking in the sun on the bank requires an accurate shot to its tiny brain or a spine shot. A slight error in shot placement will many times see the Crocodile slide back into the water and disappear forever. Crocodile hunts in Africa require patience, as many Crocodiles may have to be observed before a suitable trophy specimen is targeted.
Many trophy Crocodile hunts are done each year in central and southern Africa. The largest specimens seem to come from Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Tanzania. Lake Cahora Bassa in Northern Mozambique is a prime destination for taking Crocodile hunts in Africa. Northern Zimbabwe’s and Zambia’s Lake Kariba is also a popular destination for Crocodile hunts.

HUNTING CAPE BUFFALO IN SOUTH AFRICA
7 All-Inclusive Full Hunting Days in the Eastern or Northern Cape £11,150 / $13,587 / €12,904
8 Nights Lodging Included!
A Typical Day Hunting Cape Buffalo:
Buffalo hunting is one of the most exciting hunts you can undertake in your African hunting career, so you will begin your day by fuelling up with a light breakfast and coffee while in camp. Once breakfast is finished and all your gear is loaded up, you’ll head out to waterholes in search of fresh Cape buffalo tracks. Once some good tracks are spotted, you, your PH, and your tracker will set out on foot following them. It is relatively easy to track a big herd through the bush, as they leave distinct crushed swathes of grass in their path, an abundance of prints in bare areas, and many droppings as well. There’s a saying that buffalo are hunted with your feet, so be prepared for a lot of walking and tracking once you get on a group. As you make your final approach to the group, the challenge is to sneak up and identify a big trophy bull. Once you and your PH make the distinction, it’s time to slowly set up on your shooting sticks and line up your shot. This can be tough in a herd, as there are many animals all moving about at once. Once your PH gives you the go-ahead, take your shot and be prepared for the coming adrenaline rush!
While hunting buffalo, the two best times of the day are from 6 am to 12 pm and then again from 3 pm to 6 pm. Between these times, it is the hottest part of the day and the buffalo are stagnant and bedded down. It is best then to come back to camp, eat some lunch, and take a rest to wait them out. If your PH deems it necessary to stay on your buffalo for a specific reason, it is possible to eat a packed lunch in the field instead of returning to camp. At the end of the day, you’ll return from hunting to a camp with a warm fire and a fantastic meal on your plate!
Your hunt will occur on a private reserves of approx. 20,000 acres. There is a herd of over 200 buffalo on this reserve. Buffalo trophy size ranges from 36″ to just over 40″.
